Coir planters are made from coconut husk. These planters are lightweight and inexpensive. The walls of coir pots are permeable and plant roots are able to penetrate these walls. Because these pots are made of biodegradable material, they can be directly potted (along with the plant) either into the ground or into a larger planter. The coir pot will, in time, decompose and become a part of the soil. This helps avoid the problem of transplant shock in plants. Coir pots are often used for growing seedlings.
